Challenge

Picturing faster, fairer claims adjustment

Medical record review is stressful for everyone involved. Collecting, organizing, and evaluating all the potentially relevant information is confusing and time-consuming. Communications between adjusters, providers, and claimants can be hard to track, and deciphering medical jargon can further heighten frustrations. That’s why it usually takes 3 to 6 months (or longer!) to settle a claim using standard tools and processes.

As industry experts, our clients had felt the financial and emotional costs of this system, and their experiences had sparked a vision for a digital solution that would make claims processing simpler, faster, and more transparent: ChartLamp. They knew potential customers and investors would need to see to believe, so they partnered with us to develop a proof-of-concept package that would attract the financial backing to bring their idea to life.

Process

Embodying a cutting-edge concept

ChartLamp’s founders brought us the substance of a major industry innovation, and asked us to help give it shape. We conducted interviews and market research to define ChartLamp’s target users and identify their greatest pain points. We then used those insights to create a high-fidelity prototype – complete with professional, aligned branding – that demonstrates how ChartLamp radically improves the claim review process.

Stakeholder Interviews

Charting the user experience

We leveraged the clients’ subject matter expertise to generate user personas, identifying medical claims adjusters as the primary user group. From there, we mapped the current user journey, honing in on areas with the most improvement potential: categorizing, understanding, and discussing a claimant’s medical records. Finally, we laid out an ideal journey made possible by ChartLamp, then used it to determine the features our prototype would need to win over investors.

Feature Prioritization

Learning from the past

The personas and journey maps revealed the many ways existing tools were failing users, and conversely, many possible functions our product might use to address them. We leveraged our product expertise and our clients’ industry insight to evaluate the complexity and impact of each option, enabling us to hone in on the features that would make for a compelling proof-of-concept – and a successful MVP in the future.

MVP Release Proposal

Combining our expertise

Our research and analysis highlighted four essential features to highlight in an MVP prototype: highly visual anatomical mapping of medical records; a dynamic timeline for scanning medical histories; a tagging and sharing system for streamlining communications between; and monetization calculator to help assess the cumulative value of a claim. The clients embraced our recommendations and approved us to move forward with prototype design.

Branding

Designed to shine

Proof-of-concept clients like ChartLamp need investors to envision their product thriving in the real world–and that means making the prototype look and feel as realistic as possible. Drawing from our competitive analysis and user personas, we created a basic but cohesive brand designed to resonate with target users while standing out from legacy solutions. Through an iterative process, we transformed the clients’ original logo concept into a clean, versatile representation of ChartLamp’s mission: making medical histories clear and visible.

Hi-Fi Flows

Modeling success for future users (& investors)

After applying ChartLamp’s new brand system to our hi-fi user flows, we created a sophisticated interactive prototype. We crafted a pitch demo sequence that would allow our clients to tell a compelling story with the prototype: a hero’s journey in which a user overcomes longstanding hurdles and frustrations through the clarifying power of ChartLamp.

  • Body Map View: ChartLamp visualizes a claimant’s healthcare data by mapping medical codes to the relevant body parts (leveraging EHR standardization frameworks like FHIR)
  • Responsive Timeline: This dynamic feature lets users observe a claimant’s medical history in the context of space and time. Users can display medical events within a specific timeline, or scan back and forth to see how conditions emerged over the years
  • Select & Share: ChartLamp offers powerful communication efficiencies within and between the parties involved in a medical claim. Users can tag and comment on aspects of a medical record, and choose with which users to share these questions and insights.
  • Aggregate Estimates: When a user tags a selection of potentially relevant events from a claimant’s health records, ChartLamp pulls estimated payouts from historical data to track and aggregate the potential value of a claim.

I can’t even tell you how blown away I am by this prototype. The visuals are highly impactful – you can see the product’s power to help people focus on what’s relevant, get to the core things, and do it in a way that saves everyone time, money, and headaches. I can’t think of anyone I’ve worked with in over a decade who wouldn’t want this!
